One thing that we, at Maid in Essex, just love is optimising your lifestyle to include and encourage healthier, more natural living. And one thing that we always encourage our customers to do is try to pay attention to the products they’re using in cleaning their home.
For instance, many of these contain harmful, or harsh chemicals that may not be ideal for long-term exposure. This is why you might want to switch to more natural, and healthy alternatives, such as this lemon and baking soda mix.
While you can use either of these two ingredients on their own, sometimes, they are made even more potent when combined. While they have many things in common (both lemon and baking soda are, for instance, whitening agents), they also possess unique special powers. For instance, baking soda is a powerful drawing ingredient, which means it draws out stains and even body aches when used internally.
So how can you use lemon and baking soda in cleaning your home?
You can clean your floors with it (as well as other dirty surfaces)
The lemon and baking soda mix is particularly effective when scrubbing out your bathroom or kitchen, which tend to be the most washed surfaces in your house, since they get messy the fastest.
The lemon juice and baking soda duo will extract persistent stains (even grease) from your floors, tables, and other hard surfaces, while leaving behind a fresh odour to boot!
Use it to clean dishes
Since the baking soda and lemon juice scrub is good for getting out grease and other stains, this makes it a smart option for scrubbing your dishes. Make sure you don’t scrub too roughly though, to avoid scratching delicate tableware.
Remember, you probably want to ensure that you use healthy, non-toxic cleaning agents on things like forks, or plates, which come into direct contact with your mouth.
Clean your wood cutting board
Unfortunately, it’s not enough to rinse or pour some dishwasher detergent on your wood cutting board, which is notorious for its ability to attract bacteria. So what you’ll want to do instead is to squeeze out some lemon juice, sprinkle some baking soda, and scrub the cutting board. Leave it to sit for about 45 minutes (or an hour, even), then rinse well, to get rid of bacteria and accumulated dirt.
Clean out your drains and bins
Unfortunately, drains have a way of retaining unpleasant odours from the bits of food that go down. However, lemon juice and baking soda are known to neutralize unpleasant smells, so mixing up the two ingredients can be a very smart way of cleaning your drains. Bonus points, since baking soda is also often used in unclogging drains. The mixture is also good for cleaning out bins, and getting rid of the unpleasant odour there too.
Use lemon to cleanse textiles and shoes
Lemon juice can help get out the yellow sweat stains from your clothes, and the odour from your shoes, though we wouldn’t add baking soda to this one, for risk of decolouration.
