How To Stay On Top Of Your Ironing

3. Ironing Tricky Items

Cuffs

Iron cuffs using a handtowel. The easiest way to iron the cuff on a sleeve is to roll a handtowel (until it is about the size of a wrist) and place it in the cuff. Iron with the towel in the cuff to get a nice, round look. Voila!

Patterns, beads and sequins

All these items will cause you extra ironing stress! Even eyelets or embroidery can be a pain! Best way to deal with this little annoyance is to iron the item face down with a towel underneath. This will keep the pattern from getting flattened or warped, and will stop anything nasty from melting to your iron!

Wool

Woollen garments are not much loved by the steam iron. Acrylic knit items will require you to iron by pressing, rather than moving the iron in circles or straight lines. Ironing most knit items in circles will stretch the fabric. Iron damp where possible and hang flat to dry. Alternatively avoid woollen items where possible!

Cords, Velvet and other sumptuous soft stuff

Cords and velvet should not be touched by the surface of the iron, but they can be steamed. Use the steam function on your iron, while holding it roughly 1/2″ from the surface of the wrong side of the item. Smooth down with your hand for a perfect finish!

Of course – the very best thing to do with ironing, is to hand it over to someone who is an expert in all things creasable!  Here at Maid In Essex we pride ourselves on our high quality ironing service, which we offer as an addition to our regular weekly cleaning services.
